The Town of Mead has been awarded a $600,000 grant through the Colorado Department of Local Affairs (DOLA) Energy and Mineral Impact Assistance Fund (EIAF) program to support construction of the Town’s new police station and municipal complex. The competitive grant program evaluates projects based on several factors, including demonstrated need, connection to energy impact, measurable outcomes, resiliency, readiness to proceed, local financial commitment, and alignment with community goals.
The funding will support Mead’s new approximately 20,000-square-foot police facility, which is currently under final design and planned on Town-owned property located west of Interstate 25 near the Liberty Ranch subdivision. The new station will include administrative, records, patrol operations, detective offices, holding cells, evidence processing, secure parking, training space, and support areas necessary for modern law enforcement.
The Town of Mead established its Police Department in 2017 and has since operated out of a former Public Works modular building totaling approximately 2,400 square feet. Since that time, the department has grown from 4 to 20 employees, while calls for service have increased from approximately 3,200 annually to more than 9,300 annually.
“Less than ten years ago, Mead launched its own police department with four employees operating out of a small modular building,” said Colleen Whitlow. “Today, our officers are responding to more annual service calls, and the demand for public safety continues to grow alongside our community. This investment from DOLA is a major step forward in delivering a police facility that reflects the needs of Mead today and prepares us for the future.”
The Town’s current police facility lacks the infrastructure and specialized space needed to support modern law enforcement operations, meet legal compliance requirements, ensure secure evidence handling, and provide safe working conditions for staff and the public.
“This project is about more than just additional space,” said Police Chief Brent Newbanks. “The new facility will improve officer safety, provide private and secure areas for victims and witnesses, strengthen evidence handling and investigative capabilities, and ensure we can meet state compliance standards. Our current facility was never designed to support the level of service Mead now requires.”
The new police station is part of a larger municipal complex that also includes facilities for the Mountain View Fire Rescue District and the High Plains Library District, both of which are currently under construction.
Town officials expressed appreciation to DOLA for recognizing the importance of the project and supporting long-term investments in public safety infrastructure for growing Colorado communities.
