Bridge Design Project

County Road 34 (Welker Ave) Bridge Design Project

Project Needs & Goals: County Road (CR) 34, also known as Welker Avenue, traverses through the heart of the Town of Mead and plays a pivotal transportation role by linking our community to I-25, our schools, and downtown and by connecting Mead to nearby towns where many of our neighbors shop and commute to for work. The bridge on CR 34, located just west of CR 5 and spanning the Mead Lateral, was constructed in 1937 and has served the community well for many years. While it can still support legal loads, it shows signs of wear and tear. To ensure continued safety and convenience for everyone, the Town has prioritized its reconstruction. The project's first phase is to design a replacement structure. In October 2021, the Town of Mead applied for a Federal Off-System Bridge Funds Grant and was awarded the grant in March 2022. This grant helps fund the current design phase of the project. In 2023, The Town applied for and was awarded $1.6 million in grant funding to replace the Weld County Road 34 bridge. The forecasted growth and increased traffic made this project a high priority for our town. The Off-System Bridge Program helps to fund Municipal and County bridge projects by considering bridge sufficiency ratings, structural deficiency and functional obsolescence, and average daily traffic.
